WEST FARGO, N.D. (AP) - The body of a woman was recovered from the Sheyenne River on Thursday after an extensive search.
The West Fargo Fire Department and Police Department say the woman’s body was recovered at about 3 p.m. Thursday along the bank between 13th Avenue West and Seventh Avenue West. Her body was found nearly 24 hours after authorities got the initial report about a woman entering the river.
“The search was a little more challenging because we did not have a confirmed entry point,” said Fire Chief Dan Fuller. “Once we started to use our grid system and methodically process the area we were able to make the discovery.”
Conditions such as river currents, ice sheets, branches and curves made the recovery process difficult, authorities said. The initial rescue operation began around 4:20 p.m. Wednesday, but became a recovery operation due to river conditions, low light, and the need to keep crews safe.
Police are still investigating, but foul play is not suspected.
Fuller said earlier that a note and the woman’s car were found in the parking lot of the Sanford Clinic next to the river, KFGO reported.
