LAS VEGAS (AP) - Police in Las Vegas asked for public help Tuesday to identify the mother of newborn girl found crying in a trash bag at an apartment complex during the weekend.

Lt. Ray Spencer told reporters the baby, who is Black, was hospitalized after being found with her umbilical cord still attached. She was apparently healthy and is expected to survive.

Spencer stressed the existence of a no-questions-asked “safe haven” law in Nevada that lets parents leave a child under 30 days old at a hospital, fire station or emergency care facility without facing arrest or prosecution.

It was not immediately clear if the mother of the girl found a little after noon Sunday would face criminal charges.

A woman called 911 after the sound of a baby’s cry led children to find the girl in bushes in an area without video security surveillance, police said.

Spencer said it appeared the infant had been left shortly before she was found, and that she will be placed in the care of county protective services.
