CHANDLER, Ariz. (AP) - A man was arrested Wednesday after DNA evidence allegedly linked him to a 1991 sexual assault, Chandler police said.

They said 65-year-old Gary Robert Young was arrested at his home Wednesday and booked into jail on suspicion of multiple felony charges including sexual assault, aggravated assault, kidnapping and burglary.

It’s unclear if Young has a lawyer yet who can speak on his behalf.

Police said a young woman was kidnapped at gunpoint and sexually assaulted at a Chandler apartment in November 1991.

A composite sketch was released, evidence was collected and witnesses interviewed, but police say no suspect was identified and the case went cold.

In the early 2000s, police sent evidence from the sexual assault to the Arizona Department of Public Safety Lab and DNA was identified.

Chandler police said they used investigative genetic genealogy resulting in a list of possible leads including Young.

Last month, detectives did surveillance on Young and collected his DNA.

It was sent it to the state lab and police allege that Young was linked to the sexual assault.

Young was 36 at time of the alleged incident and he and the victim were strangers, police said.
