MOUNT HOPE, Kan. (AP) - Two people were killed in a collision when a driver apparently went the wrong way on a Kansas highway and crashed into another vehicle, Sedgwick County authorities said Monday.

The head-on crash happened late Friday on Kansas 96 just east of Mount Hope.

Officers responding to the scene found two cars in flames and tried unsuccessfully to get the drivers out of the vehicles, Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Lt. Tim Myers said.

Both drivers were pronounced dead the scene. Their names have not been released.

Myers said investigators believe one vehicle was driving west in the eastbound lanes of Kansas 96. The accident is still under investigation.
