COLUMBIA, Md. (AP) - A shooting in Maryland has left a pregnant woman dead and her baby in critical condition.

Rabiah Ahmad, 30, was struck by a bullet inside her Columbia residence Friday when multiple shots were fired into the house, Howard County police said in a news release.

Ahmad, who was 28 weeks pregnant, was transported to a hospital and later died.

Doctors delivered the baby, and the infant was in critical condition as of Sunday, police spokesperson Seth Hoffman told The Baltimore Sun.

“Our condolences and prayers go out to the family and friends of Ms. Ahmad and to our entire Howard County Muslim community who are shocked and saddened by the incident which occurred on Eid al-Adha, the Day of Sacrifice,” Howard County Executive Calvin Ball said in a statement.

Ahmad’s boyfriend, Kadeem Bailey, confirmed to The Sun that Ahmad was Muslim.

Zainab Chaudry, director of the state’s Council on American-Islamic Relations office, said the organization has been in touch with police about the shooting. “At this point, there are too many unanswered questions, and the community’s help can make a tremendous difference,” Chaudry said.

Police are offering a $5,000 reward for more information on the shooting.
