CLEVELAND (AP) - Former world champion boxer Adrien Broner was sentenced to seven days in Cuyahoga County jail for violating his probation in a 2018 sexual assault case.
Judge Sherrie Miday said Wednesday that she hoped this would be a wake-up call for Broner, who was arrested in Miami in March on drunk driving charges, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported.
Broner admitted to Miday during Wednesday’s hearing that he was struggling, that his wife had left him and that he felt he needed counseling.
A 35-year-old Wickliffe woman accused Broner of assaulting her in a nightclub in Clevland’s Warehouse District during the 2018 NBA Finals.
Broner pleaded guilty to assault and unlawful restraint, both misdemeanors, and was sentenced to two years of probation in April 2019.
The 31-year-old Cincinnati native was originally charged in November 2018 for gross sexual imposition, misdemeanor sexual imposition and abduction.
The woman also filed a civil lawsuit against Broner, who did not hire a lawyer in that suit. He was ordered to pay $830,000 by Common Pleas Court Judge Nancy Margaret Russo.
