MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A man who was shot and wounded while exchanging gunfire with Alabama police has been charged with attempted murder.
Upon release from a hospital, Xavier Damon Taylor, 22, was charged with three counts of attempted murder, one for each officer he was accused of shooting at during a traffic stop Thursday, according to court records filed Monday.
Taylor was in a car that was pulled over by Montgomery police Thursday, news outlets quoted Police Capt. Saba Coleman as saying at the time.
The occupants began shooting at three officers, who returned fire, according to police.
Officers chased the car until it crashed, and Taylor and another occupant were taken to a hospital with gunshot wounds that were not considered life-threatening, the agency said.
Police initially said a third suspect escaped from the scene, but later said it appeared only the two were in the car.
No officers were injured, officials said.
The case was turned over the State Bureau of Investigation and the officers were placed on leave.
At the time of the shooting, Taylor was serving three years on supervised probation, having served time in prison for robbery convictions.
He remained in jail Monday, news outlets reported. It was unclear whether he had an attorney who could comment on his behalf.
