OPINION:
Remove one protest sign from the Gen. Robert E. Lee statue area in Richmond, Virgina, and there’s immediately an all-points bulletin put out. Yet, throughout the past several months of destruction, in which Monument Avenue residents have had to deal with unruly, law-breaking, mob-like crowds, the city administration turned a blind eye to locals’ plight. Now that Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney’s agenda of statue removal has been fulfilled, shouldn’t it be time to let the police get involved and solve some of these crimes?
I’m baffled as to the cause of all the fighting in the first place. Has it really been about getting everyone unified, or has this merely been an absolute-power tug of war? Based on recent political tirades and Democrat-vs.-Republican arm wrestling, I’m guessing it’s more of the latter.
I don’t know about others, but I’m truly disappointed that seismic change seems to be merely an enticement. Once the wool has been pulled over our eyes, we get the same old class system of subservient and overseer.
