A man who died after being pursued by a sheriff’s deputy last week suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said Monday.

Shiloh Smith, 35, of St. Joseph, died Thursday after a chase that began in Gentry County in northwest Missouri because of traffic violations. During the chase, Smith and a sheriff’s deputy exchanged gunfire, the patrol said.

The pursuit ended in DeKalb County when Smith’s pickup truck crashed.

A preliminary autopsy indicated Smith died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the patrol said.
