PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Seventeen fire departments across Rhode Island are sharing almost $3.9 million in federal grants to help them replace worn out and obsolete equipment with more modern, efficient gear, officials say.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Assistance to Firefighters grants will be used to purchase critical equipment, including fire hoses, trucks high-tech breathing equipment, and other protective equipment, according to a statement from the state’s congressional delegation.

“These federal grants will help firefighters across the state enhance public safety and protect themselves as they can continue to serve and perform their essential work,” U.S. Sen. Jack Reed said.



Providence is getting the largest cut, more than $1.1 million to help pay for new vehicles. East Providence is getting nearly $700,000 for mobile radios and breathing apparatus.

Fire departments in Central Falls, Cranston, Cumberland, East Greenwich, Foster, Narragansett, North Kingstown, North Providence, South Kingstown, Smithfield, Warwick, Coventry, West Greenwich, West Warwick and Woonsocket are also getting grants.
