MAYETTA, Kan. (AP) - The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting of a man accused of wielding a knife in northeastern Kansas.

The shooting happened Wednesday evening near Mayetta, after a Jackson County Sheriff’s deputy tried to stop a car with a stolen license plate in a casino parking lot, and the car fled, according to a KBI news release. The deputy gave chase, and the car crashed a short time later.

The driver - later identified by police as Shanon Wren, 41, of Topeka - and a woman fled from the car on foot, officials said. The Kansas Highway Patrol and deputies later found the pair after a search, and officials said a trooper shot Wren during a confrontation in which Wren was armed with a knife.

Wren remained in critical condition Thursday at a Kansas City, Kansas, hospital, officials said.

The woman was taken to a hospital in Topeka and treated for a condition unrelated to the incident before being released, officials said.
