KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Authorities are trying to determine what killed a man who was initially believed to be the victim of a hit-and-run crash.

Police Capt. David Jackson said officers responded shortly before 3 a.m. Thursday after the man was found lying in the street covered in blood.

The Kansas City Star reports that the man, who was in his early 20s, was badly injured but was still breathing. He was taken to a hospital where died a short time later.

Originally officers thought the victim was injured in a hit-and-run crash. But his injuries appeared to be “more suspicious,” Jackson said. The man’s death is being investigated as a homicide.
