STOUGHTON, Mass. (AP) - A 17-year-old pleaded not guilty to a murder charge in connection with the fatal shooting of another 17-year-old in a car outside an apartment complex in Massachusetts last month.

Police say they arrested Jaylen Wallace at an outlet mall on Friday and charged him as an adult in the death of Christian Vines of Randolph, Massachusetts, on July 31.

Wallace arrived at a district court on Monday to hear the charges, but did not to appear in the courtroom, the Brockton Enterprise reported. An attorney representing Wallace entered a not guilty plea and the judge ordered Wallace to be held without bail.

Police responded to reports of a gun being fired in the parking lot of an apartment complex in Stoughton, Massachusetts, after 3 p.m. on that Friday afternoon and found Vines injured in a car, the newspaper reported.

He was brought to a hospital where he died.

Vines’ sister and mother accepted his high school diploma for him on Aug. 8, the newspaper reported, and many graduates wore pins with his photo and the words “In Loving Memory” at the ceremony.
