MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont state government offices were closed Monday during the state holiday commemorating the Revolutionary War victory over the British at the Battle of Bennington.

The battle was fought in 1777 just over the border in New York when soldiers fighting for the British marched toward Bennington in an attempt to seize weapons stored there.

Festivities were held in Bennington over the weekend and a ceremony took place on Sunday at the battlefield in New York.
