ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - An online forum hosted by the Rochester school district about the upcoming year ended abruptly Saturday after it was flooded with racist remarks and images.

Rochester City School District Superintendent Lesli Myers-Small was about 10 minutes into a PowerPoint presentation for more than 200 viewers when someone began covering it with obscene and racist drawings. Then the chat board began to fill with remarks, according to the Democrat and Chronicle of Rochester.

The district later apologized for stopping the forum “due to unsavory characters ’zoom-bombing’ the informational meeting.”

“We apologize for this unfortunate incident, which involved the exposure of racial epithets and other graffiti on the screen,” read a statement. “The Rochester City School District condemns such behavior and will work to make sure the upcoming forums are different in format as to make sure this unfortunate incident does not happen again.”

The district this week announced the coming school year would begin Sept. 14 online.
