ANDERSON, S.C. (AP) - A man who South Carolina deputies allege “ambushed” them this week died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head during the incident, the county coroner confirmed Thursday.

Earlier this week, Anderson County Sheriff Chad McBride told news outlets the deputies were searching for two people who ran out of a car after an attempted traffic stop Tuesday night when they were caught in an “ambush situation” and fired upon from a hill next to a Lowe’s parking lot.

The deceased, Bryan Keith Hamilton, Jr., of Greer, South Carolina, also had three gunshot wounds to the lower extremities from deputies returning fire, county coroner Greg Shore said.

McBride said deputies saw Hamilton with a firearm and then heard a shot.

“This was a combat-style situation where deputies returned fire believing they were fired upon in just mere seconds,” McBride said.

A 16-year-old girl was injured. A police dog named Roscoe was injured by friendly fire and died Wednesday morning.
