MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - The state of Vermont has committed the money needed to finish a 93-mile rail trail across the northern part of the state by the end of 2022.

Gov. Phil Scott announced Wednesday the Legislature had authorized spending $2.8 million for the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail, which will be matched by $11.3 million in federal funds, to complete construction of the trail.

“The LVRT will bring together some of our most rural communities while boosting local economies and improving quality of life for Vermonters and visitors,” Scott said in a statement.

Currently 33-miles of the trail is open, mostly near St. Johnsbury and Danville and in the Morrisville area.

The trail is located on a rail line that was completed in 1877 and operated until the 1980s. It is being managed by the Vermont Association of Snow Travelers, the organization that oversees snowmobiling in the state.

“We are pleased to enter into this new phase of our relationship with the state, which will significantly speed up the timeline for completing this project,” VAST Executive Director Cindy Locke said in a statement distributed by the governor’s office.
