OPINION:
No matter what amount the political parties decide on when it comes to extending unemployment aid, the funds must be extended into January 2021. The reasons are quite simple. If President Trump does not receive enough Electoral College votes in November, he will be a lame-duck president. Nothing happens as far as federal legislation during the lame-duck period, from November to January. The date of inauguration is Jan. 20, 2021. In addition, if either the House or Senate flips, they are unlikely to entertain or to debate any new extension or stimulus until the new Congress is sworn in (Jan 3, 2021). But the new Congress would need to wait until Jan. 20, when the president is inaugurated or re-inaugurated.
