LOS ANGELES (AP) - A California man was fatally struck by a Metro bus in East Los Angeles over the weekend before the vehicle continued on its route, authorities said.

California Highway Patrol officers responded to a report Sunday around 12:40 a.m. of a man lying in the street near City Terrace Drive, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The coroner’s office identified the man as Peter Smith Padilla, 26, of Pomona.

Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies stopped the bus in South El Monte and determined it had been involved in the accident.

Investigators later concluded the man was hit by the bus’ rear tire and the bus driver did not notice.

A Metro spokesman declined to comment pending the outcome of a highway patrol investigation.
