BOSTON (AP) - Boston police officers who pulled over a vehicle that had been reported stolen recently were surprised to find that the suspect was an 11-year-old girl wearing a medical mask, the department announced Wednesday.

Because of her age, under state law the girl could not be charged with a crime. Instead, she was released and turned over to state child welfare authorities.

A woman called police at about 8:30 p.m. on April 22 to report that her car had been stolen in the city’s Dorchester neighborhood, the department said in a posting on its website.

The woman told police she left her teenage son and nephew in the car. One of the teens told police that someone wearing a mask approached the vehicle, demanded that the occupants roll down the window and ordered them out.

The girl then got in the car and drove away, police said. She was stopped a few blocks away.
