JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) - A car approaching an accident scene in northern New Jersey struck a road divider, a police cruiser and an officer early Tuesday, leaving the officer hospitalized in critical condition.
Both accidents occurred on Route 139 eastbound in Jersey City, which leads into the Holland Tunnel.
The first crash happened around 12:30 a.m., when a car driven by a 32-year-old New York woman overturned for an undisclosed reason, according to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office. That driver was treated at a hospital and was released later Tuesday.
Several emergency responders arrived on scene shortly after the crash, including an officer with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and three Jersey City police officers. Those four were helping to secure the scene when the second accident happened around 1 a.m., prosecutors said.
The driver in the second crash, a 27-year-old New York woman, struck the divider and a Jersey City police vehicle before hitting the Port Authority officer, who suffered serious undisclosed injuries, prosecutors said. His name has not been released.
Two Jersey City officers suffered minor injuries and were treated at a hospital, as was the woman driving the car. All three were released later Tuesday.
Both accidents remain under investigation, authorities said, and no charges have been filed.
