HAVERHILL, Mass. (AP) - A new memorial honoring soldiers who lost their lives in the Vietnam War is under construction in Massachusetts.
The Haverhill memorial will honor the 13 soldiers from the city who were killed in the war. Construction at Mill Brook Park is expected to be completed in August with a possible ribbon cutting in October, The Eagle-Tribune reported Sunday.
There was an original memorial located in the park, but it was decommissioned and buried after it had been vandalized, said Ralph Basiliere, chairman of the city’s Vietnam Memorial Commission.
The new memorial will include four granite markers with brass plaques displaying educational information about topics related to the war, Basiliere said. A circular concrete ring will contain a new “13 memorial” honoring the fallen soldiers.
The approximately $175,000 project is being funded by state grants and private donations, as well as in-kind donations and services.
