JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Two people were dead and another was critically injured following a fire early Tuesday, Jacksonville Fire and Rescue officials said.

The fire broke out at 2:30 a.m. and quickly grew in size, catching the house next door on fire at well, the agency said on Twitter. At least 16 people were inside the two homes.

Most of the people inside the homes were able to get out, but firefighters rescued two before they were prevented by flames from entering the homes again.



The two injured people were take to hospitals for treatment, and one later passed away.

Once the fire was out, firefighters found a body inside one home. The identity of the person has not been released.

The State Fire Marshal will investigate.
