The director-general of the World Health Organization on Monday cautioned that an “effective” vaccine is the only method to stop the spread of coronavirus.

During a televised news conference, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus cautioned countries against lifting lockdown and social distancing measures until health measures have been properly implemented.

“Ultimately, the development and delivery of a safe and effective vaccine will be needed to fully interrupt transmission,” Mr. Tedros said.

He warned of a potential resurgence of COVID-19 due to the “global connectedness” of the world, despite reports from some countries the spread is slowing.

Countries, including the U.S., have begun developing and testing coronavirus vaccines, however health experts have said COVID-19 vaccines are unlikely to be widely distributed for 12-18 months.
