NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) - Construction on a $3.5 million outdoor athletic complex at Mitchell College has started weeks earlier than expected as sporting events have been canceled and students have left campus during the pandemic.

“It’s a glimmer of hope in a dark time,” baseball coach Travis Beausoleil told The Day of New London.

Plans have been in the works for years, officials said.

The athletic center at the small liberal arts college in New London will replace existing grass fields with artificial turf fields used for multiple sports. Each one will have a scoreboard, bleachers and dugouts.

College officials said baseball, softball, lacrosse and soccer will be among the sports that benefit. The complex will also be used by recreational, intramural and club programs.

Roughly 600 students attend the college and about one-third are athletes, according to school officials.
