LEXINGTON, N.C. (AP) - Authorities in North Carolina have identified a man who was shot and killed last week by sheriff’s deputies following a chase through three counties.

The Winston-Salem Journal reported Tuesday that John Mark Hendrick Jr., 32, was identified by the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office as the man who died.

The office said that Hendrick was a passenger in a stolen SUV that deputies stopped in the Linwood community in Davidson County. Authorities said that Hendrick was killed after driver Charles Justin Boothe, 31, tried to run over two Davidson County deputies.

The sheriff’s office said the deputies began firing. Hendrick was killed and another unidentified person was injured but is expected to survive.

Authorities have declined to identify that passenger or the deputies involved in the shooting. The races of the people in the SUV and the deputies involved have not been released.

The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident.

Boothe faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon on a law-enforcement officer and fleeing to elude.

He was sent to jail with bond set at $100,000. He is scheduled to appear in court April 16. It is unclear if he has an attorney.
