YORK, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina courthouse bailiff known for serving his community for more than 50 years has died in a car crash.

York County Coroner Sabrina Gast said 77-year-old Charles “Doody” Dunlap died Thursday in a two-vehicle crash near the York courthouse. The crash is under investigation.

The Rock Hill Herald reports Dunlap worked at the court for two decades after retiring as a deputy at the York County Sheriff’s Office, and before that he’d worked in emergency response.

Dunlap previously told the newspaper he was among the first black deputies at the sheriff’s office.

Retired Judge John C. Hayes III called Dunlap a courthouse legend and said he would be missed.
