CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia Del. Sharon Malcolm has died at 72.

Malcolm’s campaign manager Emmett Hedrick says Malcolm was found around noon Monday after she died in her sleep. He declined to say whether she had any existing medical conditions.

The Kanawha County Republican was appointed to her seat in 2018 and was elected to a full term later that year. She was running for reelection in 2020. Hedrick says she loved serving in the House of Delegates.

House Speaker Roger Hanshaw issued a statement mourning Malcolm and calling her a “fierce public servant, who passionately stood in defense of the principles she held dear.”

She was the first female assistant doorkeeper for the House of Delegates and was the first woman to be assistant sergeant-at-arms for the state Senate.

Funeral arraignments are pending at Barlow-Bonsall Funeral Home in Charleston.
