ELKO, Nev. (AP) - Heavy rainfall in northeast Nevada set a record for the day in Elko with nearly twice as much precipitation in 24 hours as normally falls in the whole month of September.

The National Weather Service says the 1.02 inches (26 millimeters) of rain that fell at the Elko Airport on Thursday broke the old record of .72 inch (18 millimeter) set in 2004.

The average precipitation for September in Elko is .57 inch (14 millimeter).

The storm left a coating of snow on the mountain ranges. Temperatures were expected to drop below freezing late Friday night into Saturday, but highs were forecast to return to the 70s (20s Celsius) on Sunday.
