TUPELO, Miss. (AP) - A Mississippi police officer received a promotion and is retiring after she and a city agreed to settle a discrimination lawsuit she filed.

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports Tiffany Gilleylen was promoted from sergeant to lieutenant in the Tupelo Police Department.

Tupelo City Council members voted Tuesday to let Gilleylen buy her service weapon “upon her retirement.”

Gilleylen is African American. Her lawsuit against Tupelo said that because of her race and gender, she was passed over for a promotion to lieutenant earlier this year.

The city agreed to a settlement Sept. 3, and attorneys for both sides said the terms are confidential.

However, city attorney Ben Logan said Gilleylen qualified for retirement in August and her promotion to lieutenant “was a part of the resolution of the case.”
