PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A review has found that most of the children of elected officials who live in Providence go to private, religious or charter schools and not the city’s beleaguered public schools.
The Public’s Radio reports that between the General Assembly, the city council and other offices, there are only eight officials with school-age kids who live in Providence. They have 13 children combined and of those, six attend traditional Providence public schools, four go to private or religious schools, and three go to charter schools.
Education Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green, who will lead a state takeover of the city’s schools following a scathing report that found them among the worst in the nation, can’t blame them.
She says the choices of elected officials reflect the sorry state of the public schools.
