ABBEVILLE, S.C. (AP) - After dozens of residents came to a school board meeting to discuss merging two rural high schools, the Abbeville County School Board delayed its decision.

Instead, the board voted to have an architect draw up plans and cost estimates to either keep both Abbeville High School and Dixie High School open as high schools with massive renovations or to build a new school in the center of the county for all high school students.

The Greenwood Index-Journal reported that the board told residents they will have to approve a bond referendum for either choice. The date of the vote has not been set.

Most board members agreed something has to be done because both schools are in need of major repairs.
