PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The deaths of hundreds of fish in a Rhode Island pond are being blamed on a project to repair a dam.
Providence approved plans to repair the low-level outlet on the Canada Pond Dam by first lowering the water level a maximum of 16 feet (5 meters).
City contractors say after lowering the water level by about 15 feet (4.6 meters) fish were dying and turtles and amphibians were moving out of the pond due to a high demand for oxygen.
A spokesman for Mayor Jorge Elorza says the water level will not be reduced any further.
State wildlife officials say most of the fish that were found on the southern shoreline were bluegills or yellow perch. Some largemouth bass and common carp were also killed.
