NORTH HERO, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife is looking for help from the public in preparing some Lake Champlain beaches for nesting turtles.
The year’s spiny softshell turtle beach cleanup day is on Saturday, Oct. 26.
Volunteers will pull up vegetation to prepare beach nesting sites for next year. The volunteers may also find a few hatchlings that remain in underground nests late in the year.
In addition to threatened spiny softshell turtles, these nest sites are also used by map turtles, painted turtles and snapping turtles.
Fish and Wildlife biologist Toni Mikula will have hatchling spiny softshell and other turtles on hand and will talk about the long-term turtle recovery efforts.
