NEW CASTLE, Del. (AP) - The mother of a 23-year-old Delaware inmate who reported twice being raped in his cell and later died of self-inflicted injuries is suing prison officials and the health care provider.

Her lawsuit accuses corrections and health workers of not doing enough to address Darius Sarro’s suicidal behavior and mental health concerns.

She alleges that Sarro was classified as “seriously mentally ill” and should’ve been under observation, but instead it took 30 minutes for employees to locate him unconscious in a bathroom before he died in 2017.

The Delaware News Journal reports the Department of Corrections received the lawsuit Wednesday. The suit also names contracted health provider Connections Community Support Services. The DOC declined to comment.
