ANDERSON, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina university intends to add football as its next intercollegiate athletic program.

Officials at Anderson University said Friday they’ve secured a $3 million challenge gift to help raise an additional $3 million needed to field a team.

University President Evans P. Whitaker says the time is right to offer football to the community.

WYFF-TV reports the goal is to field a team for the 2024 season that will play NCAA Division II competition as a member of the South Atlantic Conference.

South Atlantic Conference members that have football teams include Carson-Newman University, Wingate University, Lenoir-Rhyne University, Mars Hill University, Newberry College, Tusculum University and Catawba College.

Anderson University currently fields 18 intercollegiate athletic teams, with men’s lacrosse beginning play in 2021.
