WOONSOCKET, R.I. (AP) - Authorities say a woman has died in an early morning house fire in Rhode Island.
The fire in the Woonsocket home was reported at about 7 a.m. Monday.
Fire Chief Paul Shatraw said the first firefighters on the scene encountered heavy smoke coming from the attic area.
Firefighters entered the home and found the woman unresponsive on the first floor. She was taken to Landmark Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.
Her name was not released but officials described her as middle-aged.
A dog also died in the blaze and officials said the home is likely a total loss.
The cause remains undetermined.
