DOVER, Del. (AP) - A private college in Delaware that has received millions of taxpayer dollars is still facing extreme financial challenges.

The News Journal reported Saturday that the state has given Wesley College in Dover more than $2 million and approved another $1 million since 2018.

The money has not allayed concerns about the school and whether it can remain financially solvent. In June, the U.S. Department of Education placed the school on a monitoring list over concerns about its “financial responsibility.”

Funds there were supposed to go to renovations have gone to operating costs. The school has also discussed rerouting money from a scholarship fund.

College president Robert E. Clark II said this is not a new situation for Wesley or similar schools. He said he is confident in the school’s future.
