PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Providence Public Schools have received their second scathing report of the year, this time on the resources to English learners in the district.
The Council of Great City Schools, a coalition of urban school districts across the country, was asked to conduct the study last year by former Superintendent Chris Maher.
WPRI reports the group delivered its first blistering report on English language learning in Providence in 2012.
The recent study looked at research of 14 schools in February and found little improvement for English learners even though they make up one-third of the district’s students.
The report outlines the district’s issue of allocating limited space for English learners, causing students to either wait at home for a seat to open or transferring to schools far away from their neighborhoods.
