PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Violent and property crimes are declining in Providence, Rhode Island according to new data released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Providence Police chief Col. Hugh Clements says crime has been decreasing in the city for the past seven years.
WJAR-TV reports that 819 violent crimes were reported in 2018, the lowest number on record.
Local resident Ann Kordas says she wonders if fewer crimes are being committed or are fewer crimes being reported.
Officials say working with local organizations, increased community presence and hardworking officers has led to the decrease in crime.
FBI data also showed Providence has fewer violent crimes compared to similar-sized cities in New England.
Violent crimes include murder, rape, aggravated assault and robbery. Property crimes include burglary, motor vehicle theft and larceny.
