PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island’s transportation department has launched a new youth bicycle safety program.
Transportation Director Peter Alviti visited the William D’Abate Elementary School in Providence on Friday to talk about the “Rhode to Bicycle Safety” program. It aims to educate more than 500 children this fall about the rules of the road for cyclists, the importance of wearing helmets and how bikes work.
Students at the elementary school were practicing their skills navigating a mock street, set up at their playground.
Alviti says the program will help equip children with knowledge and skills to bike safely.
The department is offering a course to be taught at schools this fall. It includes four hour-long classes.
The department provides instructors, bikes and helmets to participating schools for free, using state and federal funding.
