RENO, Nev. (AP) - A pilot apparently escaped any serious injury in a small plane crash north of Reno between Pyramid Lake and the California line.

Washoe County sheriff’s spokesman Bob Harmon says hunters discovered the aircraft wreckage Thursday morning.

He told the Reno Gazette Journal the pilot subsequently was accounted for and is OK.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.

FAA spokesman Ian Gregor says a preliminary investigation indicates a small, single-engine Piper PA18 suffered substantial damage when it crashed while landing in an open field near Gerlach at about 4 p.m. Wednesday. It’s unclear where the aircraft took off from or where it was heading.
