CUMBERLAND, Maine (AP) - A Maine high school athlete is trying to prove to officials how he will maneuver the course with his wheelchair at a meet later this month.

Leavitt Area High School sophomore Jonathan Schomaker, of Greene, traveled to Twin Brook Recreation Area in Cumberland to navigate through the course.

The 15-year-old is trying to convince officials at the Maine Principals Association that he can participate in the regional race and the state meet, if he qualifies, alongside his teammates and other runners.

No officials from the association showed up to Tuesday’s meeting.

The association had denied Schomaker’s appeal to compete in the postseason meets last month but last week, they said he can race in a separate wheelchair division race.

Schomaker says that regardless, he will continue his fight to compete with his team.
