PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - An inmate at Rhode Island’s state prison has pleaded guilty to running a drug distribution operation from behind bars.
Federal prosecutors say 30-year-old James Gomes on several occasions while being held at the Adult Correctional Institutions last year arranged by phone for the sale and delivery of crack cocaine to people on the outside.
Prosecutors say he often passed information through his mother to two men who made deliveries to Gomes’ customers.
Authorities say his mother kept a small portion of the proceeds from the drug sales and deposited the rest into her son’s prison account.
Gomes pleaded guilty Wednesday to several drug charges. His mother is awaiting trial.
Gomes is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 20.
