MERIDEN, Conn. (AP) - A Connecticut foster father charged with crashing his vehicle while driving drunk, causing the death of a teenager in his care, is facing more serious charges.
James Bailey appeared in Superior Court in Meriden on Tuesday where he was charged with two manslaughter offenses. He was previously charged with reckless driving, reckless endangerment and driving under the influence.
The 65-year-old Meriden man was released on $200,000 bond. Neither he nor his attorney would comment outside court.
Police say Bailey was behind the wheel of an SUV that was speeding when it struck a utility pole in Meriden on Sept. 30. His 17-year-old foster son, Alex Medina, was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected. He hit his head and died days later.
Medina was a junior at Maloney High School.
