ELIZABETH, N.J. (AP) - A fast-moving fire that destroyed a multi-family building in northern New Jersey has left nearly two dozen people homeless.

Authorities say the fire on Westfield Avenue in Elizabeth broke out around 4:20 p.m. Wednesday. Roughly 20 people lived in the building, which had five separate units.

The fire was brought under control later Wednesday, though firefighters were still dousing some hot spots early Thursday. Crews were expected to demolish the building later in the day.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
