BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders has announced his annual State of the Union essay contest for Vermont high school students.

It’s the tenth annual contest in which students describe a major issue facing the country and how to address it.

The contest coincides with the president’s annual State of the Union speech to the joint session of Congress each January.

Students must submit their 250-500 word essays by Jan. 8. A volunteer panel of Vermont teachers will judge the essays.

The 10 finalists’ essays will be entered into the Congressional Record. Finalists also will be invited to be interviewed about the topic they covered.

Sanders says, “We need our students to help find solutions for the problems that face our country as they are our future leaders.”
