BOSTON (AP) - Twelve students and a staff member at a Boston middle school were taken to the hospital after pepper spray was released in the cafeteria.

Boston Public Schools say firefighters responded to the Washington Irving Middle School in the city’s Roslindale neighborhood at about 11 a.m. Thursday.

The students and staffer complaining of coughing and eye and throat irritation were treated at the hospital, but their injuries were not considered serious.

The school was evacuated for 30 minutes.

A school system spokesman says the student who released the pepper spray faces disciplinary action.
