DENVER (AP) - Attorneys for a former student who was sexually abused by her elementary school teacher say the Colorado school district has paid her a $5 million settlement.

Attorneys Michael Kane and Dan Sloane say the girl was a 9-year-old fourth-grader in Commerce City outside of Denver when the abuse happened in 2010. They say the school’s principal never met with the girl’s parents to talk about the concerns they had.

The teacher, 70-year-old Gilbert Trujillo, was convicted in 2017 for sexually assaulting two students, including the one who received the settlement.

Adams County School District 14 spokesman John Poynton said he could not comment on a confidential legal settlement.
