WEYMOUTH, Mass. (AP) - An Army soldier killed during the war in Afghanistan in 2006 has been honored in Massachusetts.
A bronze plaque honoring Sgt. 1st Class Jared Monti was unveiled Sunday at Shea Memorial Grove in Weymouth.
Mayor Robert Hedlund and other local officials offered tributes during the ceremony. An honor guard with Naval Sea Cadets was also present.
The grove features trees and commemorative markers honoring Medal of Honor recipients from Norfolk and Plymouth counties.
Monti was killed when the 16-member platoon he was commanding was attacked by about 60 Taliban fighters.
He made three attempts to rescue a badly wounded soldier before being struck by a rocket-propelled grenade.
The 30-year-old Raynham native was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his bravery by President Barack Obama in 2009.
